I am Rachel Bixby PT, DPT, E-RYT 500. I have been in physical therapy practice for nearly 30 years and have been most intrigued by those conditions which are resistant to the conventional approach. This has led me down the path of alternative and complementary practices for which I continue to have a passion for further learning. I have been a registered yoga teacher for nearly 15 years and have practiced energy work and manual therapies for nearly 25 years. Becoming a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (I currently have the provisional designation) furthers the reach of my abilities to calm and balance the nervous system dysfunction which is at the core of many health conditions.
Each step of my learning journey has deepened my understanding of the underlying mechanisms to apparent mechanical issues which evade resolution. Below the “nuts and bolts” of body posture and movement lies the software of the system which runs the programs. Neuroception, which is the perception of safety both in and out of the body, plays a significant role in how a physical body carries itself in the world from resting musculature tension to digestion, immunity, mental clarity, focus, and levels of alertness. Layering depth into each of the new practices has created an ever expanding platform from which to offer resolution and hope for a more full and meaningful life. Somatic Experiencing couples well with and has been influenced by yoga and energy medicine practices. By engaging more actively with interoceptive (in the body) awareness and protective response completion the old sad story can be re-written in the body to allow for resonance with the true or higher self.
